Highlight Services

Site Inspection and Testing

Conditional assessment to determine residual life of aged structures via various testing (e.g. chloride, carbonation, corrosion, resistivity, and cover etc.) and mathematical modelling and to optimize intervention to deterioration process

Investigating the cause, extent, implications of various defects including cracks, voids, honeycombs, low strength, and reduced cover. Assessing the impacts on durability, and providing the optimum solution.

Determining concrete strength via coring, rebound hammer testing (with site-specific conversion curves), and ultrasonic testing

Determining the locations and configurations of reinforcing, location of services, and cover concrete/ground with the use of GPR scanning and eddy current cover-meters

Determining the location of defects and element thickness using impact echo, GPR and ultrasonic testing

Temperature measurement and monitoring in concrete structures and hotbox mock-ups

Monitoring structures’ movement, displacement, stress-bar loads, strains, crack movement etc

Other tests including abrasion, acid erosion, sulfate attack, crack depth/mapping etc.

Repair and Rectification Design

  • Repair design for distressed or defective structures with optimum repair materials and system considering compatibility between substrate and repair materials
  • Repair options including crack injection, protective coating, patch repair (using concrete, mortar, and epoxy), cathodic protection, carbon-fiber strengthening etc.
  • Preparing tender documents and evaluating tenders based on their technical merits
  • Specifying repair QA testing requirements and conducting testing
  • Signing-off or certifying repair work (e.g. QDTMR Form 15/16)

Durability Design & Plan

  • Providing durability designs or plans for infrastructure and building projects to achieve their design lives via either complying relevant Australian/state standards and/or advanced mathematical modelling for concrete structures (especially in chloride and atmospheric environment)
  • Assessing and classifying exposure condition/environment, including geochemical data, water analysis results, distance to coast, air composition and processing liquid etc.
  • Specifying the suitable durability requirements including cover thickness, concrete diffusivity, carbonation coefficient, w/b ratio, SCM type and content, coating type and thickness etc.
  • Dr S Zhou developed world-leading third generation models for chloride diffusion and carbonation process allowing most accurate service life design or determination and is the first author for CIA modelling guideline. Click here for details.
  • Assessing various construction defects (e.g. voids, cracks, low strength, low cover etc.) for durability compliance and providing best rectifying solutions
  • Preparing durability completion report and maintenance and operation manual for projects

Thermal Modelling and Cracking Analysis in Concrete

  • Conduct early age thermal modelling using CIRIA C660 & C766 programs and their modified versions to predict concrete transient temperature distribution across element thickness for estimation of peak temperature and temperature differential
  • Consider various input parameters including element size, cement/binder content and composition, thermal conductivity (related to aggregate type), form-work or insulation type and retention time, placement temperature, ambient conditions (temperature and wind), other contact medium (soil or water), way of heater transfer (linear or radial) etc.
  • Estimating restraint level for various conditions including internal restraint, edge restraint, end restraint, discrete pile restraint, friction restraint, curling restraint, arching restraint, and combined restraints etc. and restraint controls.
  • Cracking analysis based on various restraints, temperature differentials/rises and reinforcement density to determine cracking risk, crack width and cause of cracking and suitable control measures such as placement temperature, form-work or insulation, concrete mix design, construction interval etc.
  • Develop and use new models for water cooling pipes, concrete on ground, layered construction, and cylinders.
  • Modelling adiabatic heat of cement hydration curve based on hot box temperature measurement data

Structural and Geotechnical Design & Analysis

  • Concrete and steel Structures for different industry sects including residential/commercial buildings, bridges, ports and marines, water chambers, railways,  energy/mining, industrial.
  • Structural integrity assessment on distressed or defected structures in above industry sects to determine the load-carry capacity and service limit status
  • Structural assessment via desktop analysis and testing and monitoring stress and deflection under specific load level
  • Pile integrity testing and assessment
  • Geotechnical assessment and investigations, design of foundation, piling, footings, tunnel, anchors, retaining walls, layer works, earth work etc.
  • We do advanced structural modelling (finite element analysis) including transient/vibration dynamic analysis for wind/earthquake; quasi-static analysis for moving vehicles and machinery; time-dependent analysis for shrinkage/creep; secondary (geometrical) analysis for slender building swaying or steel structure; soil/foundation/pile interaction analysis; post crack analysis for structural members and etc.
  • We deliver packages of civil and structural design/shop drawings.
